What is IUI?

One of the simplest solutions available in cases of infertility is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), which is a simple, safe, affordable procedure with considerable amount (15-20%) of success rate.

IUI is performed by placing the processed semen directly into the uterus of the woman. Sperms are washed and processed and highly motile spermatozoa are selected. It is then directly inserted into the uterus of a woman with the help of a catheter to facilitate fertilization. This ensures that increased number of sperms reach the fallopian tube and thereby enhancing the chances of fertilization. It is done in cases of erectile dysfunction, unexplained infertility, hostile cervical condition including cervical mucus problems etc.

During the beginning of the cycle, tablets and/or injections are given to increase the number of eggs. Follicle monitoring is done to see the number and size of the eggs in regular interval. Ovulation trigger is given when the egg size is between 18-22mm and Endometrium thickness is >8mm. IUI is then performed within 24 hrs and 36-38 hrs in case of double IUI. In case of single IUI, it is performed at 36-39h hrs.
